Providing care to individuals living with dementia requires much more than understanding Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders. As dementia progresses, agencies must continually evaluate whether their staffing, supervision, care planning, communication, documentation, safety practices, and quality management systems continue to meet each individual’s changing needs.

Designed specifically for home care administrators, managers, and supervisors, this four-hour program examines both the clinical principles of dementia care and the operational responsibilities of agency leadership. Participants explore how dementia affects day-to-day agency operations, including service acceptance decisions, caregiver competency, workforce development, supervision, person-centered care, family communication, quality management, and organizational performance.

The program combines a two-hour instructional course with a two-hour guided implementation practicum. Through realistic case studies, leadership exercises, editable templates, and practical implementation tools, participants evaluate their organization’s current practices and identify opportunities to strengthen systems that support safe, compassionate, person-centered dementia care.

Unlike traditional dementia education that focuses primarily on the disease itself, this program demonstrates how dementia influences the leadership decisions that occur every day—from referral and admission through care planning, caregiver supervision, incident management, Quality Management Program (QMP) activities, Annual Organizational Evaluation (AOE), and ongoing performance improvement.

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this program, participants will be able to:

• Describe common dementia diseases and their impact on home care service delivery.
• Apply person-centered care principles throughout agency operations and workforce practices.
• Evaluate dementia-related risks and implement appropriate supervision and management strategies.
• Support caregivers providing assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs).
• Develop effective approaches for responding to dementia-related behaviors and communication challenges.
• Strengthen communication among consumers, families, caregivers, and supervisors.
• Evaluate workforce training, competency, and supervision systems that support quality dementia care.
• Analyze how dementia care influences day-to-day agency operations, staffing, documentation, and service delivery.
• Incorporate dementia-related performance measures into the agency’s Quality Management Program (QMP).
• Use findings from dementia-related incidents, complaints, training, and quality activities to support the Annual Organizational Evaluation (AOE) and continuous organizational improvement.

To receive four clock hours of course credit, participants must successfully complete the instructional course, all required workbook activities, and document a minimum of 120 minutes of guided implementation activities approved by the course facilitator.
